Last Known Surviving 9/11 Search and Rescue Dog Honored in NYC

Search and Rescue Dog, Bretagne, returns to New York City for a fabulous 16th Birthday day on the town.

September 11, 2001 was the first deployment for Bretagne and her owner, Denise Corliss. As members of Texas Task Force 1, they helped with the rescue efforts at Ground Zero.
This year, Bretagne celebrated her 16th birthday back in New York City where she received a hero’s welcome and a day filled with well deserved celebrity treatment.
Corliss remembers that through all those heartbreaking days when the rescue mission turned into recovery, Bretagne stayed focused on her job.
“When our task force arrived in Ground Zero, I just couldn’t believe the magnitude,” Corliss said. “And I looked down at her, and she seemed stoic and ready to work.”
There were 100 Search and Rescue teams at Ground Zero. Bretagne is the last known dog still living today. On her special day in New York, she was honored with luxury hotel accommodations, limo rides and her own personal billboard in Times Square.
“She represents working dogs and the disaster dogs in particular,” Corliss said. “They all are deserving for a day like today.”
Today Bretagne volunteers as a Therapy Dog and visits elementary school children.
As you will see in the video, Bretagne may be a senior citizen now but her heart is as young and strong and generous as ever!
